María Fernanda Vélez Sandino, 20 years old, from San Juan del Sur is a student at the Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales (UCC Main Campus) in Managua and also holds a scholarship with the A. Jean Brugger Foundation. She is currently enrolled in her 3rd year of an Economics Degree with a Major in International Trade. María told Del Sur News that on Sunday, November 12th, she participated in the 2017 Entrepreneurship Fair along with about 30 other projects competing in the categories: Business Ideas, Business Plan and Constituted Businesses.
The business idea of María Fernanda Vélez is called Tree Concept. She expressed; “It’s a company that will develop and distribute sun screen based on essential oils. The product is 100% natural and free of zinc oxide, has moisturizing and hydrating properties is non-staining and prevents skin aging.”
Vélez Sandino added “This project was for the International Trade class II where students were asked to produce a product that complied with all the norms for export outside of Nicaragua. My business idea was inspired by the need that Nicaraguans have to take care of our skin that is constantly exposed to the sun. The product manufacturing time is 12 hours and it comes in two sizes; 100 grams and 172 grams. As they were samples, the project was self-financed. Future plans call for a patent on the product and to form a small production company.”
In Nicaragua, there are many trade fairs for entrepreneurs and already some businesses have managed to realize their ideas.
María Fernanda Vélez Sandino won First Place in the Entrepreneurship Fair at her university. She said; “It was a great achievement and there are some companies that have made me proposals to purchase my product but it’s necessary to patent it and produce it for export.”
