OAS in Managua for Election Observation
Municipal Elections in Nicaragua will be held on Sunday the 5th of November and a mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) is here in Nicaragua to begin the observations of the voting process and count. The Chief of the Mission is the Vice President of the Electoral Court of Uruguay; Mr. Wilfredo Penco.
He arrived in Managua last week to learn more about the Nicaraguan election process. The total strength of the mission will be 60 personnel and comprised of regional coordinators, international observers and experts in electoral organization, registry and electoral justice. The OAS has observed 14 electoral processes in Nicaragua including the 2011 general elections and the 2012 municipal elections. Since 1962, the OAS has deployed 248 election missions in 27 countries of the region.
A Universal Store
Last Saturday, General Álvaro Baltodano (the Presidents Advisor on Investments) opened the new Universal Department Store in Managua, the first outside Costa Rica. Universal is a chain of 14 wholesale and retail stores based in Costa Rica and focusing on seven major categories: Bookstore, Toys, Home, Beauty, Baby, Technology and Christmas.
The 5,000 square meter, two level store is located at, in Centro Financiero El Retiro at the south west corner of the El Güegüense Roundabout (near PriceSmart). There are 14 different departments with more than 30,000 products. Year’s Biggest Drug Bust
Nicaraguan police made the biggest drug bust of the year so far when they seized almost 950 kilos of cocaine at the Nicaragua/Honduras border post of El Guasaule, Somotillo, in the Department of Chinandega. The drugs were found inside a Guatamala container. The driver was able to make good his escape using the cover of the hundreds of people at the busy border post. Last month, another Guatemalan was found to have 228 kilos in a truck trying to leave Nicaragua.
Giants of Rivas
“Gigantes de Rivas” will be as competitive as ever this season and looking to improve on two titles and two runners-up in the four years of the franchise. The former Venezuelan, now a Nicaraguan citizen, Wuillians Vásquez (last year’s MVP) leads the 25-player roster announced by the club. Vásquez is joined by key players; Elmer Reyes and Carlos Teller. Joining them are youngsters Omar Obregón, Dilmer Mejía and Armando Ruiz. Imported players include; Venezuelan catcher Luis Alen, US outfielder Reggie Abercrombie, Dominicans Robinson López and Vladimir Frías. They will be supported by Lendy Castillo, Carlos Sano, Nelson Perez and Jose Julio Ruiz. Nicaraguans; Darrell Campbell, Moisés Flores, Moncho Flores, Gustavo Martinez and Berman Espinoza make up the squad. Season opener is 6pm on Tuesday, 24th of October against The Boer.
