Fashion Design from Nicaragua has received a boost by none other than Hollywood film star Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro). In an article in Forbes Magazine, Banderas (in his capacity as Honorary President of the Miami Fashion Week) singled out two young Nicaraguan designers; Shantall Lacayo and Erick Bendaña when highlighting designs from the Latino culture. In particular he complimented Lacayo and made the prediction; “I think this girl from Nicaragua is going to explode in the next three to five years”.
The Miami Fashion Week is from May 30th to June 3rd 2018 at the Ice Palace Film Studios and showcases collections from emerging designers. As well as Banderas being appointed as honorary president, Miami Fashion Week brought in the Miami Fashion Institute of Miami Dade College. Along with the college, Banderas is keen to support workshops and talks on sustainability, fashion in relation to environmental conditions and worker exploitation. They will bring in a number of experts from those areas to teach students and create awareness within the industry.
