Vendors at the Municipal Market in San Juan del Sur say that the 90 day construction project to replace the roof, add supports and repair the electricity service will start this coming Monday 10th of July. During that time some vendors will re-locate to a temporary street market on the south side of the market from La Lancha to The Republika.
The old El Gato Negro and Iskra Travel space is taking shape with four separate commercial spaces being created out of the two old ones. Keller Williams Realty, Inc. is a real estate company that is new to Nicaragua and San Juan del Sur and will be opening their office soon. The Taco Spot Street Style will also be moving in from across the street and their space is being finished right now. The third tenant is Hug Life United clothing store who will be moving from in front of the Cinema San Juan. The fourth business will be a grocery store.
“Element” is the name of the new restaurant going into the old El Bocadito tapas restaurant, formerly, and still known by many as “Mache’s Bar”.
Ice Cream from Chontales will soon be available from a new “Heladería” (ice cream shop) across from Sylvia Sanchez and in what was more recently a bright red painted Claro retail location. The Dept. of Chontales is the cattle and dairy region of Nicaragua, supplying most of Nicaragua with dairy products.
Don’t forget the BPP fundraiser at the Escuela Integral next to the sports park. Los Traductores (part music and part theater) will present another of their musical spectaculars, this one being “The Revenge of the Baby of Funk” this Saturday 8th July at 8pm. All cover charges collected (50 Córdobas entrance fee) will go to support the Barrio Planta Project. See advert on page 12.
Henry’s Iguana Bar will be celebrating their 11th Anniversary on Saturday 15th of July with a special event sponsored by Flor de Cana. More next week.

Disk Golf Tournament
Sunday the 16th of July is the 9th Annual Disk Golf Tournament at Marsella Valley Disk Golf Club. Birthday Boy Vince will be on hand to enjoy the event this year while the responsibility of organizing has gone to Big Wave Dave and his crew. The format is very similar to years past with the addition of an Under 18 Category for the growing number of youth players (that have grown up with this game). There will be food and beverages (beer, rum and soft drinks) as well as the popular 13th Hole “New Bar” run by the San Juan del Sur Cerveceria. See display advert on Page 12.
San Juan del Sur Cervecería is proud to announce the Second Annual Festival of Handcrafted Beer in San Juan del Sur. This year’s festival will take place at the Port on Saturday August the 12th and will include beer tasting from all of Nicaragua’s craft breweries, live music, food trucks and more. Tickets will be available online and in select locations throughout Nicaragua soon. Del Sur News will keep you updated on this event, meanwhile, mark your calendars as based on last year’s success for the first one, this will be a “must attend” event.
Procession of the Virgen del Carmen 2017 – San Juan del Sur
Check out next column for more of the agenda of events for this unique celebration. The main event is on Sunday the 16th of July when the image of the Patron Saint of Seafarers; La Virgen del Carmen goes on an offshore procession in the bay of San Juan del Sur accompanied by a flotilla of boats.
July 17th – ¡Día de la Alegría!
Monday July 17th “Day of Joy” as on this day in 1979, Anastasio Somoza Debayle fled Nicaragua and the National Guard surrendered. As the name suggests, this is day of partying and celebration.
July 19th – Day of the Revolution
This day celebrates the triumph of the Nicaraguan Sandinista Popular Revolution which was led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (The FSLN) who overthrew President Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979. Normally a quiet day in San Juan del Sur as most of the celebrating is done in Managua. Wednesday July 19th is a public holiday and a good day to steer clear of Managua.
Program of the Blessed Virgin of Carmen 2017 Co-Patron of San Juan del Sur, the Sanjuaneños and Protector of the Fishermen
Father Bismarck Cruz, The Committee of Traditional and Religious Festivities and the local council invites the population to participate with love and devotion in the festivities of the Virgin of Carmen in the tourist town of San Juan del Sur. Various church services and processions will take place leading up to the 15th and 16th of July (Saturday and Sunday).
Saturday 15th of July
7:00 p.m. A commemorative act in front of the church will recognize honorees of this festivity in honor of the Virgin of Carmen.
Presentation of the “Bride of the Festivities of the Sea and the Virgin of Carmen” – Ms. María Fernanda Cruz Solís and her Consort Miguel Ángel Gutiérrez
8:00 pm. Transfer of Procession of the image of the Virgin of Carmen to the bower of the Municipal Park for its Vigil until dawn.
8:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Cultural Event; Folkloric Ballet by Nicaragua Mía, under the direction of Bruno Antonio Pomares.
Sunday, July 16
Time: 4:00 AM – Diana (Reveille, Bugle Call or Fanfare) through the main streets of the city port in welcoming the day of the Virgin of Carmen
2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Transfer of the Virgin of Carmen in a procession to the Tourist Center and Port Enclosure.
4:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Procession on the High Seas with families of fishermen and devotees of the Virgen del Carmen.
5:45 – 7:00 pm. Return of the venerated image of the Carmen to the church. (Procession of the Light).
7:00 – 7:30 pm. Raising of the image of the Virgin of Carmen to her rightful place inside the church.
